Alpha United got a taste of their own medicine when they succumbed to a 1-3 defeat to a well-organised Fruta Conquerors unit in the Guyana Football Federation’s (GFF) Stag Elite League Finale on Friday evening at the National Track and Field Facility, Leonora.
Conquerors continued their outstanding form to cement their second place position. The last time these two sides met in the earlier rounds, they played to a 1-1 stalemate.
The Tucville-based club could count themselves unlucky as yet again there seems to be an issue concerning transfer legitimacy of their players as their leading goalscorer Shaquille Agard had to sit on the bench.
But Agard’s absence did not in any way stop the free-flowing football they have been playing throughout the League Finale, as they took the lead in the 31st minute, thanks to goal by Jahall Greaves.
In the second half, their dominance continued as Eon Alleyne extended the club’s lead in the 66th minute, while Hubert Pedro added to the pain of Alpha United with a goal in the 85th minute.
A late goal by Delon Lanferman in the 90th minute gave Alpha United some consolation, if any, as they suffered their second loss of the season form eight matches.
Conquerors, on the other hand, are well placed with 19 points from their eight matches, with just one defeat.
In the other match, Slingerz FC continued their dominance in the League following a 2–1 win over Pele FC.
The unbeaten Slingerz were simply too much to handle for a listless Pele unit as they plunged to their fifth loss from eight matches.
Their performance has been a stark contrast to the second place finish in the League Genesis.
It was Devon Millington in the 32nd and Julian Wade in the 58th, who found the net for Slingerz, while Jumane Somerset scored Pele’s only goal in the 86th minute.
Slingerz FC have now extended their lead at the top of the table with 24 points from eight successive wins.
