mdatt, is calling for a full probe to determine the reasons for the flooding.
“It is always recommended, wherever there is weakness, that an investigation or some fact-findings be done,” he explained.
According to Ramdatt, initial reports pointed to the lack of fuel for the pump station, and more so, the lateness of the pump attendant in reporting for duty. These two reasons, he stated, are unacceptable.
He has declared that anything that lends to uncovering the full truth behind the situation he would fully support. Besides, he stated that the probe would ensure there is not a recurrence of the flooding.
“[The probe] would create a situation or assistance to eliminate all weakness to prevent any further devastation,” the Regional Chairman noted.
The APNU+AFC administration has spent millions of dollars to purchase and install pumps at strategic locations countrywide, but with all these monies being spent, residents are still affected by flooding.
Due to heavy and continuous rainfall earlier this month, several villages within the two regions had suffered tremendous losses as a result of flooding.
In Region Two, the highest rainfall — of more than nine inches — was recorded at Supenaam; and at Hibernia, where approximately eight inches of water had accumulated. Among the other areas affected were Charity, in the Pomeroon, where approximately four inches of rainfall was recorded; Wakapao, where more than two inches were recorded, and at Better Hope, where more than four inches were recorded.
As at this date, no assessment of the flooding was done. The RDC and the people of Region Two are concerned about the continued negligence and delayed response from the Agriculture Ministry on such key matters. (Shemar Alleyne)
