The Guyana Badminton Association (GBA) has run off the National Sports Commission-sponsored National Junior Badminton Tournament on Thursday evening at the Gymnasium.
There are three categories in which the young athletes are competing: U11, U15, and U19, and there are singles, doubles and mixed doubles divisions. According to the GBA, the tournament attracted children from many schools around Georgetown, and some from Berbice.
Director of Sport (DoS) Steve Ninvalle was on hand on Thursday evening to share brief remarks and serve off the first shuttle to open the tournament.
“I would like to say that from the level of the National Sports Commission, we are very heartened by what we see happening in Badminton. Badminton is one of the more organized core sports as it relates to its nursery and its academy. And that is why, when we have requests from the Badminton Association, we tend to treat it as priority, because of the level of organization and what you’re doing at the Academy,” Ninvalle said in words of praise to the GBA.
Meanwhile, the GBA did their bit in raising awareness for Breast Cancer Month, and celebrated Pinktober by asking participants to wear pink.
