A release from the Guyana Boxing Board of Control read as follows: “The Guyana Boxing Board of Control is deeply saddened to learn of the recent passing of former well known illustrious boxer and title contender Lalta Narine.
“Lalta was born on 3rd April 1968, and grew up in Essequibo. He began his boxing career under Colin Morgan at the Ricola Boxing Gym, and from there joined the People’s Militia in 1984/1985 under the tutelage of the late Caesar Barrow. He campaigned initially as a bantamweight at 118lbs.
“Lalta’s first bout as a professional boxer was on 5th October 1986. He lost by disqualification over 4 rounds against Clifford Vaughn, but proceeded to win his next three (3) fights, developing a reputation for producing exciting fights.
“His conquests included wins over Ramesh Bess, Winston Goodridge, Malcom Hawker, Wayne Coates, Malcolm Darson and Ray Jones (TKO 6), before losing to 1988 Olympic Bronze Medalist Michael Parris for the Bantamweight Title of Guyana over 12 rounds; and he went on to challenge Joseph Murray for the vacant Featherweight Title of Guyana, losing by TKO in the fourth (4th) round.
“He then travelled to Barbados, where he defeated Anthony Williams over 10 rounds and Robin Lall over 8 rounds.
“He may be best remembered for his thrilling wars with Robin Lall in 1993 and 1994, the latter for the Featherweight Title of Guyana, the first won and the second lost.
“Lalta officially retired in 1995 with 18 fights under his belt, spanning a period from 1986 to 1995.
“He was part of the former boxers’ support team which went to the Six Head Boxing Gym each day to encourage and support Keevin Allicock in his preparation for the Olympics.
“We extend our deepest condolences to his friends and family. May he rest in peace.”
