…Reigning Mr Guyana seeking to participate in Amateur Mr Olympia
By Timothy Jaikarran
Under the leadership of its President, Keavon Bess, and executives, the Guyana Bodybuilding Fitness Federation (GBBFF) have pushed the sport of bodybuilding/fitness to higher heights, and the results they have been receiving are a true testament to the time and energy they have put into the sport.
Organising Secretary Videsh Sookram has noted that the next item on the GBBFF agenda is the staging of the annual “Mr Guyana” contest, which will close out the activities of 2022.
In an interview with this publication, Sookram was asked about the GBBFF’s plans for the remainder of 2022, and he said, “The current plans for the bodybuilding federation right now? The last thing to close off the year is the Mr Guyana Championship…which will be in December, tentatively on the 17th December at the National Cultural Centre.”
Relating that the athletes in Guyana have shown improvement in the last five years, Sookram has said he believes this is because the athletes are being exposed to international competitions, and when they see the packages presented by other athletes, it pushes them to constantly lift the standard of their bodies and physique.
Sookram has admitted to being “really impressed” with the performance of the athletes at CAC 2022 in Barbados, their having bagged 12 medals and a PRO rank card. He believes this would now cause the athletes in the Caribbean to see Guyanese athletes as the ones to compete with, and be competitive against.
“We have to seek other competitions. As it is right now, Darious Ramsammy is the current reigning MR GUYANA. He is seeking to do the Amateur Mr Olympia, and I hope that Mr Ramsammy gets the full support of the Ministry (of Sport) and of Corporate Guyana. He will be having the full support of the GBBFF,” Sookram shared.
Sookram has detailed that, thus far, no athlete has reached out to compete in the Worlds Championship in November. However, with Ramsammy seeking to attend the Amateur Mr Olympia, Sookram is hopeful that Emmerson Campbell and Julio Sinclair would participate as well.
