― Hikers veterans stun Old Fort

The second day of 14th annual Guyana Hockey Board GTT Indoor Hockey Tournament went in similar fashion to the opening night at the National Gymnasium with six more exciting games.
With the ladies division not playing, the Veterans division produced a thrilling competition between Antonio’s Hikers and Old Fort’s Lets-Get-Tropical with the experience and skill at the highest level being on display to much delight of the jovial crowd. In the end, the score line did not do much justice for the fierce competition during the 30 minutes of play with Hikers dominating 5-3.

It was Devin Munroe who starred the Hikers attack sweeping four of the five goals. In the first half of the game, the scores stood at 3-1 with the advantage with Hikers as Munroe found the net in the 5th, 9th and 15th minute. Dexter Wyles (4th min.) was the lone scorer for Old Fort in the first half. Munroe scored in the 21st minute while team mate, Brian Asregado marked a goal three minutes later. Dwayne Alleyne (29th) and John Abrams (30th) were the other two scorers for Old Fort.
Meanwhile, when the big guns turned out to play in the first division category, the first contest was the 2020 team known as the National Junior Men’s team going up against Old Fort Ravers.
In the end, it could be easily justified that nervousness got the better of the 2020 side as they went down 3-1 in full play. Ascofu Simon maneuvered his way through the defensive line of the 2020 team in both halves of the game while Jason DeSantos scored a penalty for the Ravers in the 23rd minute. It took the 2020 team 32 minutes before they got on the scoring table off the stick of Hilmar Chester.
The second first division fixture of the night brought together GCC and Saints. The Regent Road based team crushing Saints 9-2. Kevin Spenser produced 5 goals while Mark Sargeant scored twice to conclude a thrilling match.
In the second division, Hikers demolished St. Stanislaus College 3-0 to secure their first win of the tournament. Old Fort Supersonic overcame a talented Phoenix team with a 6-2 drubbing thanks to doubles from Omar Hopkinson and Orin Singh.
GCC Pitbulls also found glory, sneaking past a hyped up Saints outfit 3-2. Trevon Smith scored in the 4th and 15th minutes for the victors.
Action resumes at the same venue from 17:30h today with six more games. In Division two, Old Fort take on St. Stanislaus College and Hikers battle Saints. For the ladies matches, Spartans and Pizza Hut GCC square up while Hikers match up with Old Fort. In the lone first division contest, Hikers face 2020 and in the Veterans’ class, GCC play Old Fort.
