The GCC teams have maintained their domination of the Guyana Hockey Board’s (GHB) Under-18/ Second Division Outdoor Hockey League, securing the titles in all of the formats after the round-robin-style tournament concluded on Saturday at the St. Stanislaus College Ground on Carifesta Avenue in Georgetown.
After two entertaining rounds of action, GCC won the Boys and Girls Under-18 as well as the Men’s and Women’s Second Division to cap off a good tournament, the second GHB tournament in just four months into the year.
On the final day of play in the Under-18 matches, the GCC Girls’ U-18 team secured a comfortable 4-0 victory over Hikers. Leading goal scorer in this category, Abosaide Cadogan, added two more to her tally, to finish on 11 goals and maintain her team’s position at the top of the table. In second position was debutant St. Joseph High School, who have played six games and earned themselves eight points. Saint Stanislaus (Saints), the other school-based team in the division, was in third position with seven points, while Hikers sit at the bottom of the pile with only one point from six games.
The GCC U-18 Boys have similarly been dominating their category, gathering 22 points from eight games. They lead the competition with 47 goals, the most by any team, with Kareem McKenzie scoring 22 of those goals. McKenzie has maintained the support of, and has worked well with, the regular goal-keeper, but playing in the field for the competition, Rahim Oliver has scored 10 goals to date.
Saints defeated Hikers in the U-18 Boys’ clash. Nicholas Nervais scored a double and Joshua Joseph and Edmond Chinan contributed one goal each to secure a 4-0 win for the Saints, but this was not enough to prevent Old Fort from securing the second place in this grouping.
In the Second Division women’s match, GCC closed on a high note, emphasizing their position at the top of the tree with a 5-0 win over Old Fort. This victory came from the calculated efforts of Aliyah Gordon, who scored twice; and Corina Muller, who scored a hat trick to underscore the team’s dominance; while Hikers downed Saints 3-1 as Laticia Chung scored twice for Hikers. Hikers have maintained their second position with this victory.
Additionally, Old Fort defeated GCC ‘A’ 3-2 in the Men’s 2nd Division showdown. Akeem Hope and Jason Clarke placed Old Fort in a very good position at the end of the first half, scoring in the 4th and 10th minute respectively; while Rafael Robertson scored in the 28th minute to give Old Fort a 3-0 lead at that point.
However, with two goals scored by the 36 minute, GCC seemed to have bounced back in contention in the competition, but Old Fort managed to hold on to their advantage and come out with a win.
In the clash of the table-toppers, GCC ‘B’ squeezed past Hikers in a 2-1 win, thanks to the efforts of Patrick Edgehill and Damon Woodroffe.
