According to a statement from team Mohamed’s, “Part of the donation made by Mr Mohamed will be used to offset expenses for a fund-raising dinner that will be held in July. The proceeds from that event will go toward airfare, hotel accommodations, and ground travels for the team members”.
President of the Guyana Chess Association, Frankie Farley, has expressed gratitude to Mr. Mohamed for the timely donation, while stating that it would go a long way in affording Guyana’s team the opportunity to participate in the Chess Olympiad.
According to the GCF, last weekend’s National Championships was the final qualifying event that would assist the Federation in determining who would comprise the Guyanese Chess team. The points-based selection system would include results from the already concluded Grand Prix tournaments.
Given that Wendell Meusa and 14-year-old Pooja Lam have secured the National Men’s and Women’s Champion titles respectively, these two are likely to headline Guyana’s team for the international event in July.
