Saturday morning.

The accident occurred in the vicinity of the Rum Shop Street at about 08:00h. Of those injured, two persons were listed as serious and were admitted to separate medical facilities in the city.

They were identified as Travis Pollard, 34 of Lot 105 Anna Catherina, West Coast Demerara and Shelly Thompson, 50, of Timehri, EBD.

Pollard, the GDF Corporal, reportedly received lacerations to his body and is being treated at the Diamond Diagnostic Centre, while Thompson was referred to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPHC). She reported suffered severe damage to one of her legs and lacerations to her head and body.

Reports are the route 42 minibus bearing registration number BTT 8079 swerved from a another minibus, which had stopped to collect a passenger when it came into contact with the sand truck bearing registration number GVV 6306.

Upon impact, the minibus spun and ended on the median and was then slammed into a utility pole by the truck belong to David E Cone trucking service. The bus was driven by Davindra Raghu of Sarah Johanna, EBD and from reports received; he might have lost a finger.

An eyewitness told Guyana Times that after the collision, several persons were seen hanging out ofthe windows of the minibus. Thompson, the eyewitness related, suffered the most injuries since she was sitting on the side of impact into the utility pole.

The injured passengers were pulled from the wrecked minibus and rushed to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre, where at least five were treated and sent away. Pollard and Thompson were admitted but Thompson was subsequently transferred to the GPHC.

The driver of the truck reportedly told the Police that the minibus suddenly swerved from behind a parked minibus and into his path, leaving him no room to react, hence the collision. Guyana Times understands that the driver of the minibus was described by passengers as always speeding on the roadway. He has been operating the Georgetown to Timehri route for a number of years.

Meanwhile, both drivers were taken into Police custody as investigations continue.
