GDF rank, husband arrested with illegal gun, ammo

Ranks of the Guyana Police Force’s Narcotics Branch arrested an East Coast Demerara (ECD) couple on Tuesday afternoon after an unlicensed firearm with matching ammunition was found at their house.

The suspects have been identified as a 32-year-old taxi driver and his 34-year-old reputed wife, who is a member of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF).
The arrest was made during an intelligence-led operation carried out at the couple’s Latchmie Street, Better Hope, ECD home.
According to Police reports, the ranks unearthed an unlicensed 9mm pistol along with seven matching rounds at the house. They also found a matching 9mm spent shell in the yard.
The couple remain in custody as the investigation continues.
In its last monthly statistical report for 2017, the Police Force reported that at the end of November last year some 115 illegal firearms were seized, compared to 97 for the corresponding period in 2016. Among these weapons were: 66 pistols, 19 revolvers, 18 shotguns and 12 rifles.
