GFF Elite League III…
– Buxton brush aside Cougars
A 10-man Guyana Defence Force (GDF) squad demolished the Western Tigers on Sunday night in the feature match of a Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Elite League III double header at the National Track and Field Centre.
Tigers, who had an early 2-0 lead, saw a full-spirited fightback fitting of the defending champions, who eventually prevailed 4-2.
Pernell Schultz gave Tigers the lead in the seventh minute when he volleyed home an easy goal from a corner kick by Vurlon Mills. In the 24th minute, Captain Daniel Wilson scorched home a set-piece play from near the 18-yard box to double the lead.
However, the 2016-2017 champions got right back into it when Amos Ramsey made it a one-possession game in the 26th minute.
In the second half, the GDF levelled the game six minutes after resumption as Ramsey completed his double.
When it then looked like Tigers had some favour after GDF’s Travis Henry was handed a red card in the 58th minute by referee Gladwin Johnson, Delwin Fraser made his presence felt.
Fraser netted in the 63rd and 90th minutes as the GDF secured yet another come-from-behind win.
Earlier in the night, Buxton’s Dillon Wright (58th minute) and Kobe Durant (80th minute) scored a second half goal to help their team defeat the Cougars FC 2-0.
After Sunday’s match night, the race for the title has now shifted in the favour of tournament leaders Fruta Conquerors FC and Den Amstel FC, who both have 32 points with the latter having a weaker goal difference. The GDF are third on 30 points while Western Tigers have 27 points in fourth.
