GEA launches Energy Champions Awards for businesses driving sustainability 

The Guyana Energy Agency (GEA) has launched its inaugural Energy Champions Awards, opening nominations to businesses of all sizes across Guyana in recognition of efforts to promote sustainable energy and environmental practices.
The initiative seeks to recognise businesses that are making measurable progress through the adoption of renewable energy technologies, energy efficiency measures, responsible water conservation, waste management, and green building practices.
According to Nominations, they are open until Monday, August 31, 2026, with businesses encouraged to submit projects that demonstrate tangible environmental and operational benefits.
According to the GEA, the awards support the objectives of Guyana’s Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS) 2030 by highlighting businesses that are contributing to the country’s low-carbon transition while improving productivity and operational efficiency.
The agency said the programme also aims to acknowledge organisations that are reducing their environmental footprint through sustainable business models and fostering a culture of environmental responsibility within their workplaces and communities.
The awards will recognise achievements across four focus areas: energy, water, waste, and green building.
The Energy category focuses on businesses that have implemented renewable energy technologies and energy efficiency innovations to reduce energy consumption while improving performance. The Water category recognises responsible water conservation and resource management practices.
The Waste category highlights initiatives that promote waste reduction through measures such as reducing, reusing, and recycling materials, while the Green Building category recognises environmentally responsible building design, construction, operation, and maintenance practices.
Businesses will compete in three categories based on the size of their workforce: small businesses with one to 25 employees, medium-sized businesses employing 26 to 100 persons, and large-scale businesses with 101 or more employees.
To qualify, applicants must be registered and operating in Guyana for at least two years and possess the necessary authorisations.
Applicants are required to submit a completed application form along with a project brief detailing their sustainability initiatives. Submissions must also include supporting information such as descriptions, data, photographs, and other evidence demonstrating the impact of the energy and sustainability measures implemented.
Application forms, project brief templates, and submission guidelines are available on the GEA’s website, at the agency’s office located at 295 Quamina Street, South Cummingsburg, Georgetown, or by scanning the QR code on the official promotional flyer.
Completed applications can be submitted by email or delivered in person to the GEA’s office on or before the August 31 deadline.
