Georgetown-Vreed-en-Hoop water taxis to operate from 6AM to 6PM
The Maritime Administration Department (MARAD) has announced new operating hours for water taxis plying the Georgetown-Vreed-en-Hoop route.
In a statement on Sunday, MARAD disclosed that with effect from Monday, September 21, 2020, the hours of operation of the water taxis on the Georgetown to Vreed-en-Hoop service will be from 06:00h (6 am) to 18:00h (6 pm).
Access to the stellings on both sides will commence at 06:00h and close at 18:00h. However, they will remain open shortly thereafter to allow all commuters to exit.
The travelling public is asked to note that the previous closing of the gates at 16:45h and 17:00h is no longer in effect.
Meanwhile, both passengers and boat operators are being reminded that social distancing is still in effect on the stellings and water taxis.
This will also be enforced by the Department through the introduction of additional monitors, particularly during peak hours.
The COVID-19 National Emergency Measures (No 9), which is in effect until September 30, 2020, enforces a 6 am to 6 pm curfew with restrictions to social activities as well as mandatory safety practices such as the use of facemasks in public, six feet physical distance from others and good hand hygiene to help reduce the spread of COVID-19.
With regards to travel, the Emergency Measures stipulate that “Any person who provides transport within Guyana whether, by land, water or air shall not carry in that transport more than seventy-five per cent the number of passengers which the motor vehicle, vessel or aircraft is licensed to carry and the operators and passengers of any motor vehicle, vessel or aircraft shall wear personal protective equipment while in the vehicle, vessel or aircraft.”
