GFC settles score with Brazilian XI

‒ eases to 2-0  victory

The Georgetown Football Club (GFC) avenged their 3-0 defeat at the hands of the Brazilian XI by producing a dominant display to win 2-0 on home turf Saturday evening.
Still riding high from the sponsorship deal with Copa Airlines, GFC put on a classy display even though they were wasteful in front of goal, missing a plethora of chances. The score-line should have been much bigger with at least five clear-cut opportunities not being converted.
In the opening minutes GFC’s wingers ran the Brazilian wingbacks ragged, as they produced attack after attack through the flanks. Hence it was no surprise that the first goal came from one such attack, a through ball over the top which striker, Ralph Parris showed remarkable skill and technique to take down, and then chip the goal keeper in the 30th minute to spark jubilant celebrations.

The Brazilian XI never seemed in the game as they were almost lethargic in their motions failing to give the home team any scare.  The second half resumed and it mirrored the first with  GFC continuing their  dominance with crisp passing and pressing. Center back Mark Roache capitalized on a mistake by the  opposition custodian to cement his team’s   grasp on the game. Despite trailing by two goals, the Brazilians tried to claw their way back into the game with a series of shots that  were nonchalantly dealt with by the keeper.

Despite the soggy condition of the ground, the players still produced a worthy display in front of some 900 fans. Speaking to Guyana Times Sport after the match, Parris noted that his side had promised a win for the fans and a win for sponsor Copa Airlines. He thanked the fans for their support and noted that the team is coming along pretty well as they have developed chemistry.
Likewise, General Manager Faizal Khan noted that it was a good game despite the weather and pointed out that while the team is still a young one, “it is all about development in the sport as the players grow together as a unit”.
He also spoke of a possible third match between the two teams, adding that the next match would be for a trophy and possibly cash prizes. Khan said that this trophy would be dubbed the “Copa Cup” in honour of their sponsor.
