GFC warns logging trucks against unsafe transport practices

The Guyana Forestry Commission has issued a warning to operators of logging trucks and other forms of transport used to convey forest produce, urging strict adherence to safety measures while travelling on public and private roads and waterways.
In a statement, the Commission reminded drivers transporting logs and lumber to exercise extreme caution, particularly when travelling at night.
The GFC said it has observed that some vehicles and vessels are transporting excessive quantities of forest produce, a practice it described as dangerous and damaging to roads and waterways.
According to the agency, all transportation vehicles and vessels used to move forest produce must be fully functional and certified by the relevant Government agencies. Operators must also be properly trained and certified to handle the respective modes of transport and safety procedures.
The Commission outlined several safety requirements which operators are expected to follow at all times. These include prohibiting persons from sitting or standing on top of the forest produce or on the trays of vehicles transporting logs and lumber.
Additionally, all vehicles carrying forest produce must display a triangular reflector at the extreme end of the load and carry at least two traffic cones to be placed at the front and rear of the vehicle if it is parked on the roadway.
The GFC also stressed that all loads must comply with designated weight limits and be properly secured using a minimum of three straps along with appropriate steel stanchions and rails to prevent shifting or dislodgement during transport.
The Commission warned that non-compliance with the measures will not be tolerated and offenders will face legal action.
