GFF Women’s Division 1 League: GPF down Conquerors to maintain lead
Guyana Police Force (GPF) Football Club on Saturday claimed a 5-0 victory against Fruta Conquerors Football Club to maintain their lead in the Women’s League Division 1.
The youthful Fruta Conquerors with a roster including Under-17 and Under-15 players did not make it easy for the experienced side in their quest for a win on November 25, at Eve Leary Sports Ground in Kingston, Georgetown.
The game’s first half stayed goalless until Shanic Thornhill managed to breach Fruta Conquerors’ sturdy defence in the 34th minute.
The second half began with Thornhill doubling her tally in the 46th minute, swiftly followed by two goals from her teammate, Siasi Adams in the 49th and 51st minutes. Jenelle Edmonson’s goal in the 68th minute sealed the victory in an impressive manner.
The win has firmly secured the GPF at the top of the table, boasting an impressive four wins and 12 points.
Guyana Defence Force (GDF) FC, previously tied for the top spot, have now moved to second place with three consecutive victories, for nine points, and they have a game yet to play.
Despite their recent defeat, Fruta Conquerors maintain their grip on the third spot with six points from two wins and two losses. Potaro Strikers, Pakuri Jaguars, and Santos occupy the fourth, fifth, and sixth positions, respectively.
The Women’s League Division One features seven top-tier female clubs from the Federation’s nine Regional Member Associations.
The clubs, comprising both current and former national players, are vying for the inaugural Division One title. Among these competitors are Santos, Potaro Strikers, Fruta Conquerors, Guyana Defence Force, Pakuri Jaguars and Guyana Police Force.
The league champions will earn a cash prize of $300,000, while the second through sixth-placed clubs will also receive cash rewards of $200,000, $100,000, $75,000, $50,000, and $25,000, respectively.
