The inaugural season of the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) and Women Football Association (WFA) Women’s League Division One is set to kick off on October 14 with an exciting doubleheader between Santos and Potaro Strikers and Fruta Conquerors and the Guyana Defence Force football clubs.
The league, which will feature both current and former national players from a total of seven football clubs, was officially launched on October 12. Participating teams are Santos, Potaro Strikers, Fruta Conquerors, Guyana Defence Force, Pakuri Jaguars and Guyana Police Force football clubs.
WFA President Andrea Johnson said the introduction of an elevated league for senior female players marks a significant stride in enhancing the level of competition of football in Guyana. “I’m thrilled to announce the official start of the Women’s Division 1 League. With an unwavering commitment to promoting women’s football and providing a platform for talented athletes, the league is all set to deliver another unforgettable season of competitive and inspiring play,” Johnson shared.
“This season promises to be a celebration of talent, dedication and sportsmanship, as teams from Georgetown and its surrounding areas as well as Bartica come together to showcase their skills and passion for the beautiful game.”
The victorious team will be awarded a cash prize of $300,000, while the second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth-placed clubs will receive $200,000, $100,000, $75,000, $50,000 and $25,000, respectively.
A glimpse of what to expect during the Women’s League
The Women’s League Division One will showcase the best female clubs selected from the GFF’s nine Regional Member Associations. Teams will compete in a round-robin format, with each team playing against each other twice in the first and second rounds. Each team will earn three points for a victory, one point for a draw, and no point for a loss.
Johnson noted that the GFF and WFA “remain steadfast in its commitment to the development of women’s football, offering a platform for athletes to thrive both on and off the field. We are dedicated to fostering an environment of inclusivity and equal opportunities for all.”
Football fans can expect a series of thrilling matches over the next six weeks.
“We invite the communities to join us in supporting these extraordinary women by attending the matches and spreading the spirit of women’s football in every Region. Together, we can empower women in sports and inspire future generations of female athletes,” Johnson has said.
The opening day matches will be held at the GFF National Training Centre (NTC) in Providence, East Bank Demerara from 1:30pm.
The league is set to conclude on November 11.
