GFS begins heavy-duty operator training for firefighters

The Guyana Fire Service (GFS) has commenced a Heavy-Duty Operator Course at the Leonora Training School, aimed at strengthening the operational capacity of its personnel. A total of 27 firefighters from all 10 administrative regions are participating in the one-week training programme, which began today. According to a post made on the GFS service media page, the course is focused on equipping ranks with the skills required to operate and maintain water tenders and water carriers.

Upon successful completion, participants will receive certification from the Guyana Police Force’s (GPF) Traffic Department and the GFS Maintenance Department. Delivering brief remarks at the opening, Assistant Divisional Officer Thom-Fernandes stressed the importance of discipline and responsibility among the ranks. “Every time we take the wheel, lives may depend on how safely and effectively we perform,” he said, adding that the programme is designed to strengthen skills, improve awareness, and maintain safety standards on the roadways.
He urged participants to remain focused throughout the training period, noting that safe driving remains central to effective emergency response.

“Remember that safe driving is a cornerstone of effective emergency response. By mastering these practices, we not only protect ourselves but also safeguard the communities we serve,” he added.
The training is part of efforts by the GFS to expand the number of trained fire tender operators, in line with the acquisition and deployment of new emergency response appliances across the country.
