According to the Guyana Fire Service, the aim is for citizens to be more aware of fire prevention and safety measures, hence the GFS is educating persons on the use and importance of smoke detectors and fire extinguishers.
While in that Georgetown area, Minister Benn divulged that he intends to use members of the Community Policing Groups as first responders by providing them with the necessary training and access to fire extinguishers.
Similar walk-through exercises will be conducted in other communities which are considered to be congested and at high risk of fires.
The event was planned as the Fire Service celebrates Fire Prevention Week and its 64th Anniversary, from October 3-15 under the theme “It’s better being safe with Fire Prevention in place”. During this period, there will be demonstrations, exhibitions, radio/television programmes and outreaches carried out by the Guyana Fire Service with the aim of educating the public on all things relating to Fire Safety and Fire Prevention.
