Home Entertainment GFW most promising young designer inspires kids at David Rose School
The children at the David Rose School for Special Needs were super excited to interact with Setra Oselma on Wednesday. Oselma is the Guyana Fashion Week’s most promising designer for 2017. GFW concluded three weeks ago at the Pegasus Hotel after nine days of activities. The children were thrilled that someone who is differently able (wheelchair bound) won the competition.
From the inception, GFW adopted social causes and this year, the organisers included people living with disabilities, Trafficking In Persons and domestic violence.
Earlier in the year, the Sonia Noel Foundation for Creative Arts conducted a fabric art course at the school and the beautiful pieces were showcased at the GFW launch during the Jubilee celebrations.
“I am so appreciative of Sonia and her team for working with the school to give the children opportunities,” Head teacher of David Rose school noted.
Last Friday, Noel and the winners of GFW Model Image visited the Sophia Drop-in Centre to motivate the children there. The children were treated to a GFW slide show and snacks while Kenny Hercules, Candacy Subrattie, Odas Baker and Lee Leyoung were encouraged to aim high and be positive about their future.
Other than interacting with students and telling them her story, Oselma conducted a make-up demonstration which truly amazed them. One of the teachers translated in sign language to facilitate the hearing impaired. Oselma is a cosmetologist who has a business in her hometown of Linden.
“This was truly an amazing experience for me and looking at how the kids and teachers responded was a great feeling,” Oselma said. She indicated her willingness to assist the school with her expertise in the creative department.
“It is a humbling feeling to be part of a team that is adding value to people in our society and we give God thanks,” Noel, CEO of Guyana Fashion Week said.
