GOA support national junior Table Tennis team

The Guyana Olympic Association (GOA) supported the national junior Table Tennis team that will be participating in the 2016 Caribbean Junior and Cadet Championships in the Dominican Republic.

Members of the GOA that included President, KA Juman Yassin, Secretary General Hector Edwards and Garfiled Wiltshire, Honorary Treasure handed over a cheque for an undisclosed sum of money to the committee of the Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) on Monday at the National Gymnasium after the final training session for the squad.
Yassin said he was happy to support Guyana’s junior table tennis talents since he sees them as the future prospects to represent Guyana at the Olympic Games.
In his address to the players he opined the importance of merging academia with sports and ask of the players to give of their best in representing the Golden Arrow head.
Former Junior Table tennis champion and Caribbean squash Champion Wiltshire and former cycling champion Edwards also offered words of encouragement to the players.
The GTTA President, Godfrey Munroe thanked the executive committee of the GOA for their intervention which was seen as critical in making the teams’ participation at the event a reality.
“We feel the team selected has a very realistic chance of qualifying for the Pan American Championships to represent the Caribbean Region and has high chances medal /prospect at these Caribbean Championships,” were the words of Munroe at the simple handing over ceremony.
The 2016 Caribbean Junior and Cadet championships began on April 12 and will last until April 18.

The championships will be used as the qualifier for the Inaugural ITTF Pan American Junior Table Tennis Championships scheduled for Vancouver, Canada in June 2016, where the top four teams from the Caribbean will join four teams from Central America, six teams from South America along with USA and Canada.
