A 51-year-old gold miner who admitted to his role in the robbery and killing of a Brazilian national at a mining camp in Region Eight (Potaro Siparuni) was on Thursday sentenced to life imprisonment by the High Court at Suddie, Essequibo.
Joel Olanya Bedlow, also known as “IL” or “Judgement”, was sentenced by Justice Fidela Corbin-Lincoln after being indicted for the capital offence of murder committed in the furtherance of a robbery. The court ordered that Bedlow serve life imprisonment with eligibility for parole after 15 years. He was also ordered to participate in a drug rehabilitation programme. The State was represented by prosecutors Caressa Henry and Fenton Buhdram, while defence counsel Tonza Sarrabo appeared for the accused. The murder occurred on September 5, 2015, at Mowasi Backdam, Mahdia, where the victim, a Brazilian national, was employed at a mining operation. Silva was last seen alive at about 18:30h at the camp on the evening in question. However, the following morning, a report was made to police after workers raised an alarm. Police who visited the scene discovered the miner’s body with his hands bound together with a yellow rope and visible injuries to the head. The body was later taken to the Guyana Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) mortuary, where it was identified. A post-mortem examination (PME) conducted by Dr Nehaul Singh concluded that Silva died from cerebral haemorrhage due to blunt trauma to the head, inflicted with a heavy instrument. Investigations led to Bedlow’s arrest in January 2016. Although he initially denied involvement, he later gave a caution statement in which he admitted that he and another man known as “Gaza man” went to a mining camp where they found Silva asleep in a hammock.
Bedlow stated that he tied the victim’s hands with a yellow rope, while his accomplice struck him several times to the head with a piece of wood. The men then searched the camp, removed items, including mats, and fled. Bedlow admitted that he later received thirteen pennyweights of raw gold and was told that the victim had died from the attack. A probation report presented to the court detailed that Bedlow is a father of four with no previous convictions and has spent more than 10 years on remand awaiting the conclusion of the case. The report outlined that he was raised in a financially challenging household after his parents separated during his childhood, forcing his mother to assume sole responsibility for nine children. Due to economic hardship, Bedlow left school early and entered the workforce, engaging in various forms of manual labour, including construction, seafaring and later gold mining in the interior.
He also spent a period working overseas, including in Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago, before returning to Guyana and continuing work in mining. According to the report, family members described him as supportive and responsible, noting that he contributed financially to the household and assisted in caring for his siblings. At the time of his arrest, he had been living in Sophia and was maintaining his children. While on remand at the Lusignan Prison, Bedlow reportedly complied with institutional rules and participated in available rehabilitation programmes, though he was cautioned on one occasion.
The report also indicated that he expressed remorse for the offence, accepted responsibility and conveyed empathy for the loss suffered by the victim’s family.
After considering the reports tendered, Justice Corbin-Lincoln imposed the life sentence, with parole eligibility after 15 years, bringing the long-running matter to a close.
