Golden Jags to face Bermuda test tomorrow after Monserrat victory
The Golden Jaguars got their CONCACAF Nations League 2022-2023 campaign off to the perfect start on Saturday night with a thrilling come-from-behind victory over Monserrat at the Felix Sanchez Olympic Stadium in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.
With three points under their belt, Guyana currently lead Group B of League B.
Head Coach Jamaal Shabazz opted for a starting XI that comprised goalkeeper Quillan Roberts, Matthew Briggs, Jaylen Jones, Captain Samuel Cox, Quincy Adams, Nathan Moriah-Welsh, Omari Glasgow, Neil Danns, Daniel Wilson, Torell Ondaan, and Trayon Bobb.
For the majority of the encounter, it was a 50-50 game, until Monserrat’s Adrian Clifton handed his team the advantage in the 21st minute. A sequence of passes from Craig Braham, Dean Mason, and Alex Dyer found Clifton square in front of the goal for an easy touch in.
The first half was littered with attempts from Guyana’s Nathan Moriah-Welsh and Monserrat’s Nathan Pond, but the score read 1-0 at the half.
The Golden Jaguars were visibly more intense at the start of the second half. When Clifton made another attempt at the goal, Guyana’s defence locked in this time around, to keep another goal at bay.
Minutes later, 18-year-old Glasgow, who debuted for Chicago Fire FC earlier this year, capitalised on a set-piece opportunity, floating the ball over the line of defence and into the upper-right corner of the goal, to level the scores in the 61st minute.
The 1-1 score brought a sense of relief to the Golden Jaguars outfit. Ten minutes after his first, Glasgow converted a Samuel Cox assist in front of the goal for a beautiful, game-winning strike.
Following a draw between Haiti and Bermuda in their first encounter of the League, those teams have one point and sit at second and third in the group, after Guyana, who currently lead with three points.
The Golden Jaguars will return home for two home matches at the Leonora Track and Field Facility this week. On Tuesday, June 7, the Golden Jags will battle Bermuda, while on Saturday, June 11, they will face off with Haiti. After which, the Golden Jaguars will return to the Dominican Republic for their away game against Haiti.
The Nations League will conclude in 2023, with a shot at the Gold Cup up for grabs for competing teams.
