As part of the celebrations in Guyana for the nation’s 50th Jubilee of Independence, the Golden Jaguars will tackle Canada’s Olympic team on Sunday May 15, 2016 at the National Stadium at Providence.
With a pair of second-round matches in the Scotiabank Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Men’s Caribbean Cup slated for June, the Golden Jaguars are looking to continue their development process.
“I’m indeed very happy and exceptionally proud of the players, the coaching staff and the management team for the tremendous work
they’ve been doing with that team,” said Guyana Football Federation President Wayne Forde. “The senior male team represents a brand and it’s a brand that the Executive Committee of the Guyana Football Federation will manage very carefully. We believe that is the brand that will position Guyana on the international stage to our rightful place.”
In first-round Caribbean Cup play, Guyana went a perfect played two, win two with no game drawn and no defeat (P-2, W-2, D-0, L-0). The guys from the land of many waters defeated Anguilla 7-0 at Providence then went on to beat Puerto Rico 1-0 in an away fixture. Those wins set-up dates with Curacao on June 1 in Guyana and the US Virgin Islands on June 7 in another away fixture.
“I want to encourage the nation to join me in extending a heartfelt thank you to the guys for putting in the hard work that they have over the past three international engagements and to encourage them to strive to do better as we go forward in the Caribbean Football Union’s Scotiabank Caribbean Cup,” Forde finished.
Guyana’s Golden Jaguars are looking to capitalize on this experience against a formidable opponent in Canada and gain momentum heading into the CFU games as they seek to qualify for Guyana’s first-ever CONCACAF Gold Cup appearance.
