Good Hope businessman charged for narcotics found in fishing vessel
A Good Hope, East Coast Demerara (ECD) businessman who was arrested following the discovery of a large amount of cocaine and ganja in a fishing vessel at Mon Repos, ECD, was on Tuesday remanded to prison by Magistrate Alisha George when he appeared at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court.

Azim Baksh, known as “Bato”, of Phase One, Good Hope, denied the charge when it was read to him. The Police stated that he trafficked 91.132 kilograms of cocaine and 56.008 kilograms of cannabis on July 14, 2018.
His Attorney, Bernard DaSilva, told the court that the drugs were not found in his client’s possession but rather in a boat.
DaSilva further argued that at the time of the discovery, Baksh was in his motor car on the Mon Repos Public Road, ECD.
However, CANU Prosecutor Konyo Sandiford told the Court that the defendant has been under their watch for a lengthy period. On the day in question, he, along with another man, was reportedly seen by CANU ranks on the boat where the illegal substances were found.
As such, Baksh was arrested after CANU had issue d a wanted bulletin for him. He will make his next court appearance on August 10, 2018.
