Good outing for Gajanand Singh as MMZ down Punjab CC

Former Guyana batsman Gajanand Singh recorded an all-round effort to lead the Meten-Meer-Zorg (MMZ) Cricket club to an eight-run win over the Punjab Cricket Club in last weekend’s Commonwealth Cricket League in New York.
Batting first, MMZ posted 204-4 in 20 overs on the back of Singh’s 87 and Jamaican Berston Reid’s 51.

In response, Punjab CC looked to keep the challenge, coming but fell short, ending on 196-7 in 20 overs. MMZ had earlier lost Guyana Under-19 batsman Alex Algoo for one, but Singh and fellow Guyanese Nicholas Chinkoo laid a decent platform. Chinkoo scored a promising 14, but Singh carried on his merry way. Singh, who made a cracking 37-ball 87 which included six sixes and nine fours, was supported by Reid, who scored a 37-ball 51 which was undefeated.
Singh’s brilliant innings of 87 came to an end when he was caught at mid-wicket. For Punjab CC, only Bilal Shaid had 2-36 while Adeel Ahmad and Ata Khan had one wicket each.
In reply, Punjab CC top order chipped in with scores, but it was Zahib Tariq who made an unbeaten 44 which almost took Punjab CC to a stunning win. The thrilling match came down to a close finish with 24 required in the final over. Birthday boy Mark Fedricks, a Guyanese, defended that, as MMZ won by eight runs. Singh was the star bowler with 2-21 while Chinkoo and Kevin Shewprasad had two wickets each.
