The Guyana Lawn Tennis Association (GLTA) will hold its Annual General Meeting (AGM) and elect office bearers for 2017/2018 to start a new chapter for tennis and incumbent President Jamal Goodluck is seeking to return at the helm of the association when the AGM gets underway at the National Racquet Centre from 17:30 hrs. However, it is unclear if anyone will be challenging him for the head position.
Being the fifth and youngest President of the Association since it was revitalized in 2004, Goodluck is charged with enthusiasm for a new executive, which he hopes will take local tennis to new standards. He has consistently expressed his befuddlement in trying to understand why tennis in Guyana has not been afforded resources and opportunities similar to some sports in Guyana even as the association is noted for striving for professionals standards of operations to keep the sport of tennis alive in Guyana.
Of significance is his motivation for the development of standard tennis facilities across the country which primarily includes eight tennis courts at the National Racquet Centre where Guyana can benefit from hosting international competitions like its sister territories in the region. To this end, Goodluck makes an appeal to tennis clubs and friends of Guyana’s tennis at home and in the diaspora to assist the organization to develop this pivotal investment in the future of our youth, which is currently the premier initiative of the GLTA to be presented at the AGM.
The GLTA has benefited from the expertise and professionalism of past and present players such as Samuel Barakat, Ramesh Seebarran, Harry Panday, Dr. Steve Surujbally, Rudy Grant, John Tracey and overseas based Brian Fung, Dr. Arthur Hazelwood and Bill Adams. The GLTA embraces the future input of such professionals and the larger tennis community.
Nominations are expected from several tennis clubs for this year’s AGM: Diamond Tennis Club, Non-Pariel Tennis Club, Sheltez Tennis Club, Roraima Tennis Club, Le Ressouvenir.
