Govt, business community to rebuild home for Bonasika fire victims

– makes donation to other families

Minister within the Public Works Ministry, Deodat Indar on Tuesday handed over $2 million to the Bonasika family whose home was destroyed by fire on December 30, 2021.
Joshua Gill lost his house after a fire ravaged the building, leaving his family of eight homeless while he and his wife were in the backdam working to maintain their children.
$1 million will go towards labour cost while the other $1 million was the cost of construction materials to rebuild the house. The construction materials were donated by the Ministry of Housing and Water.

Private Sector Commission Chairman Paul Cheong hands over the cheque to Joshua Gill whose home was destroyed by fire

Minister Indar noted that after reading the papers about the devastating news, he immediately reached out to the Chairman of the Private Sector Commission, Paul Cheong to mobilise some assistance.
He added that over $5 million was mobilised to assist three families who recently suffered tragedies. These include the family that lost two members after the house collapsed, the fire victims and a Tuschen, EBE family.
Tulsieram Sookdeo, who recently lost his wife and daughter after their house collapsed, will be given $1 million along with building materials to rebuild.
During the simple handing over ceremony at Bonasika, Cheong said that the Private Sector was willing and grateful to assist the families.
“Guyanese has a spirit of giving and this Private Sector grabbed the opportunity to help these families. I am encouraging the families, especially Gill, to use the donation wisely and make the life of your family better,” Cheong said.
Meanwhile, Regional Three Chairman Sheik Ayube said that the regional administration was busy working with the families to bring some relief to them.
“After the fire destroyed the house and the mishap where a house collapsed and pinned two, I immediately visited the area where an assessment was done. Arrangements were made and a quantity of foodstuffs and clothing were donated to the families,” Ayube added.
An emotional Gill thanked the Government and the PSC for their timely intervention. He stated that the assistance received will definitely make his family happier and more comfortable.
