Govt engages Leopold Street youths on employment opportunities
Minister within the Ministry of Public Works, Deodat Indar, on Friday engaged youths from Leopold Street, Werk-en-Rust on development works to be executed in their community.
That engagement was a follow-up to President Irfaan Ali’s commitment to offering training and jobs to persons from the area, made when he led an outreach to that area last month. Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Charles Ramson Jr, and technical officials from the Ministry of Public Works were also part of the meeting.
The youths are to benefit from employment opportunities on drainage projects.
President Dr Irfaan Ali had, back in November, led an outreach to Leopold Street, where he had engaged residents in infrastructural development projects to be conducted, as well as skills training opportunities to be made available to them.
During the visit, the Head of State had informed residents that the desire of the People’s Progressive Party/Civic Administration is to have young people “actively and positively” involved in the development and transformation of Guyana. In that way, he had explained, they could also get opportunities to live a better life.
“We have to ensure that our young people are trained, that our young people are equipped. We have to ensure the women in our society live a more healthy and positive life. We have to ensure that we have the conditions here that will allow all the children to be in school… I’m here to push this agenda,” the President was quoted as saying.
Home Affairs Minister Robeson Benn had also been tasked with leading a full team to Leopold St. That team was to include Private Sector players who are looking to recruit people to do welding and fabrication works.
The Labour Ministry has also been integrally involved in bringing these promises to fruition.
