Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha officially launched the Melanie Shadehouse and Women Empowerment Project in Melanie, East Coast Demerara (ECD) on Saturday, marking another significant step in the Government’s drive to empower vulnerable groups and strengthen community-based agriculture nationwide.
Speaking at the event, Minister Mustapha explained that the initiative is part of a wider national programme designed to create opportunities for women and other vulnerable groups through targeted agricultural interventions.

The project will feature a modern shade house, where crops in high demand will be cultivated under the technical guidance and ongoing support of officers from the National Agricultural Research and Extension Institute (NAREI).
“We want to be the main food producer in this part of the hemisphere. That is why we are empowering groups to produce, while the Government provides the inputs and the technical support,” Minister Mustapha stated.

He noted that the Melanie initiative is just the beginning of a broader programme of support, with plans to roll out additional transformative measures to boost production in communities across the country. The Government’s long-term vision, he added, is to position Guyana as a leading food producer within the region and beyond.
Through projects like Melanie, officials aim to combine empowerment and technical capacity building, ensuring that women and vulnerable groups have the tools and resources to contribute meaningfully to the nation’s agricultural growth.
