Govt partnering with ExxonMobil, Caribbean Airlines
Corporate sponsors have partnered with the Social Cohesion Ministry to facilitate the formal ceremonial aspect of the Independence flag-raising ceremony on Friday, which will focus on Guyana’s children and youth.
ExxonMobil’s Director of Public and Government Affairs, Kimberly Brasington, said the company was pleased to share this special occasion with Guyanese, particularly the youths.
“It is an honour for ExxonMobil to be at this table and be a part of it.
“When we heard the focus this year was on youths and culture and celebrating the country, we were absolutely interested and when the Ministry said they were open to corporate participation and sponsors, it was something that ExxonMobil wanted to be a part of from the beginning,” she said.
Brasington further added that she hoped engaging the youths was an initiative that the Government would continue to foster.
Marketing Director of Caribbean Airlines, Alicia Cabrera said the airline’s team was “honoured to be here today to celebrate the unwavering commitment [of Caribbean Airlines] through the sponsorship and partnership we have with you, at this event.”
At the flag-raising ceremony, it was revealed on Wednesday, approximately 4000 children are expected to participate. As such, modifications were made in favour of the participating youths by scheduling the activities at an earlier time on Friday afternoon.
Social Cohesion Minister, Dr George Norton said that this year’s ceremony would have a special focus on youth with emphasis on developing a strong sense of national pride, patriotism and appreciation for the strides which Guyana has made since the gaining of Independence.
Meanwhile, the Sport Director, Tameka Botswain stated that local Guyanese artistes will be given a chance to showcase and promote their talent at the flag-raising ceremony during a two-hour long musical event. The audience will see performances by Big Red, Natural Black and Blaze Antonio among others.
This, she said, is an opportunity to promote and showcase the talents and products that are coming out of Guyana.
The ceremony will feature a grand cultural display depicting Guyana’s national patrimony while highlighting Guyana as an “emerging green state”. The coordinators have announced that the cultural display will feature about 2000 children. Additionally, a parade and fireworks display will follow which will comprise the military and 1500 more youths.
Guyana will be celebrating its 52nd anniversary since the attainment of Independence on Saturday. The celebrations, which will commence on Friday, are slated to begin at 02:00h.
