The Guyana Police Force (GPF) on Tuesday promoted 386 of its junior ranks with immediate effect.
The latest elevations follow the appointment of 84 Corporals to Sergeants, 160 Lance Corporals to Corporals, 96 Constables to Lance Corporals, 11 Corporals to Special Sergeants, 22 Constables to Special Corporals, and 13 Constables to Special Lance Corporals.
This year saw an increase in the number of ranks being promoted compared to last year, which saw some 297 junior cops being elevated.
Following the release of the list of purported promotions of members of the Guyana Police Force by the Police Service Commission (PSC) last year, Police Commissioner Nigel Hoppie had revoked the promotion of some of the junior ranks of the Guyana Police Force.
The Top Cop would have reportedly reviewed and approved the list of junior ranks to be promoted but a supplementary list with additional names was subsequently added. It is those ranks who were stripped of their promotion.
After hearing of the list, Home Affairs Minister Robeson Benn reviewed the entire list of junior and senior Police ranks who were promoted by the GPF.
This came just after Chief Justice (ag) Roxane George granted an order on December 31, 2020, blocking the promotion of several Police ranks to Assistant Commissioner by the Police Service Commission (PSC).
The matter stemmed from legal proceedings filed in the High Court by Senior Superintendent Calvin Brutus, who complained that he was bypassed for promotion to the rank of Assistant Commissioner of Police, even though he was recommended for promotion by the Commissioner of Police.
However, in June last year, Chief Justice George had dismissed the application.
