Home News GPHC to embark on National Month of Kidney activities
The Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation is all geared to join the rest of the world in observing National Kidney Month by initiating several activities which kick off in March.
Some of the activities include televised health, a youth discussion on kidney failure and transplant, and a kidney failure awareness walk that will be held on March 15.
Also, three medical outreaches are slated to happen on March 8, 22, and 29 that will take place in Linden, Berbice, and Essequibo.
General practitioner of the GPHC Transplant Department, Dr Keon Tracey said that the aim is to educate Guyanese on how they can detect, treat, and prevent kidney failures.
“Generally, stage one to three don’t present any symptoms, so you can pretty much have kidney failure and be at home and not know; so that is why it is important to get tested and make sure that you are aware of the possibility of you getting it,” she said.
Meanwhile, the Corporation encourages survivors of kidney failure to support their kidney failure awareness walk on March 15.
“We are asking persons if you have a relative who passed or relative who is still alive you can still support the march…it’s at 6 am starting from Parade Ground to the blood bank entrance at the Georgetown Hospital”, said Dr Josmond David-Semple, Social Worker at GPHC Transplant Department.
This year’s theme for National Kidney Month is “Kidney health for everyone, everywhere, for prevention to detection and equitable access to care”.
