GPL continues crackdown on electricity theft

Guyana Power and Light Inc (GPL) has stepped up efforts to remove illegal electricity connections from its network, with exercises conducted on Monday in four communities.
Through its Loss Reduction Department, GPL carried out operations in Stanleytown and Princess Elizabeth in New Amsterdam, Budhan Scheme in West Canje, and Swan on the East Bank Demerara.
The exercises were aimed at identifying and removing illegal connections, which GPL said can overload transformers and feeders, damage network infrastructure, and contribute to equipment failures and power disruptions.

The company also warned that illegal connections pose serious safety risks, including electrocution and electrical fires.
GPL reminded the public that electricity theft is a criminal offence and said persons found stealing electricity will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
The utility company said it will continue conducting loss-reduction exercises in communities across the country as part of efforts to curb electricity theft and improve the safety, reliability and efficiency of the electricity network.
