A Guyana Power and Light meter reader has been terminated on allegations of fraud after he was nabbed in a sting operation by Police last month.
In a notice to the public, GPL said that Gairy Major is no longer employed at the utility company and as such is not authorised to transact any business on behalf of the company. GPL in a statement on Friday said that Major’s contract was terminated after he was charged for false pretence, demanding money and impersonation and giving false information to the police.
“The company has [a] zero-tolerance policy for such actions,” GPL said.
Major along with another, between September 17 and 19, reportedly approached a GPL customer in La Parfaite Harmonie, West Bank Demerara, where they defrauded her of $25,000.
Christine Persaud, in a Facebook post, said that she was at home when the two attempted to rob her of $150,000 by threatening to remove her electricity meter, claiming that she had more than the specified limit of meters on her premises. She reported to the police that the men demanded $150,000 and she gave them $25,000 in advance. After she reported the matter to the police, the men were nabbed in a sting operation at her home.
