GPL installs new gensets at Onverwagt, Sophia substations

The Guyana Power and Light has installed the six gensets that were recently acquired, at the Onverwagt and Sophia substations.
GPL’s Divisional Director of Operations, Bharat Harjohn made this announcement in an interview with the Department of Public Information.
“Three [gensets] at Onverwagt were already installed and connected to the grid. Those three are running right now supplying power to the grid, and for the other three at Sophia, we are doing the final test,” he is quoted as saying.
Harjohn said the acquisition of the gensets is in keeping with GPL’s efforts to increase power generation, particularly during the Christmas season when there is a greater demand for power.
Last Saturday, ten new generating sets valued at nearly $500 million arrived in Guyana for the Demerara-Berbice Interconnected System (DBIS).
While six were purchased, an additional four were sent to serve as backup to maintain power generation.
These gensets, each capable of producing 1.6 megawatts, will complement the five megawatts that were sourced through the Giftland Power Purchasing Agreement (PPA).
The Government had pledged to supply additional power for the energy sector to end the scourge of blackouts that has plagued the nation.
