As coronavirus disease (COVID-19) continues to spread in Guyana, the Guyana Public Service Union (GPSU) on Wednesday announced the cancellation of the annual May Day rally.
Every year on May 1, hundreds of workers dressed in red carrying banners march along the streets of Guyana to show solidarity for workers’ rights. This year because of COVID-19 and the restrictions and guidelines to curb the spread of the virus, this will not happen.
GPSU said on Wednesday that it has decided to refrain from any action which could be considered to conflict with the restrictions and guidelines as announced by the Public Health Ministry.
“With this undertaking in mind and the fact that these guidelines extend until May 3rd, 2020, the Union has decided at its Statutory Administrative Committee Meeting held on Tuesday, April 7th, 2020, to cancel its traditional participation in the Annual Mayday Parade and Lime, which would have been slated for May 1st, 2020,” the GPSU said.
It added that it would continue to play an integral part in the fight against COVID-19.
“We are firmly committed to the national efforts in confronting COVID-19.”
