GPSU hosts workshop in commemoration of 57th anniversary of WAC

The Guyana Public Service Union (GPSU) will host a one-day workshop to commemorate the 57th anniversary of the formation of its Women’s Advisory Committee today.
The opening session will commence at 09:30h at the Union’s Headquarters, 160 Regent & Shiv Chanderpaul Drive Bourda, Georgetown.
On August 23, 1963, the Women’s Auxiliary (as the committee was initially called) was formed after the 1963 strike where women trade unionists played a major role in its success.

Part of its mandate was “…to establish a real equality of status and opportunities between men and women in the public service”, among others.
This Committee was the first of its kind in the Caribbean region and Sister Trade Unions within the region adopted a similar feature within their unions also. Today, women from around the world are represented at the highest forums, including the United Nations were annually the Commission on the Status of Women is hosted in New York and key elements of women’s development and progress are discussed and standardised.
However, among the presenters to the workshop are representatives from the Social Protection Ministry and the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).
