GPSU rewards 23 NGSA students with bursary awards

The Guyana Public Service Union (GPSU) on Monday presented Bursary Awards to 23 students who wrote the 2020 National Grade Six Assessment (NGSA). These were students whose parent or legal guardian has been a member of the GPSU.

Nevertheless, a special award was given to Guyana’s NGSA top student, Samuel Barkoye of the North Georgetown Primary School.
As a result of his academic achievement, he joined his siblings at the prestigious Queen’s College. Barkoye expressed his passion for problem-solving and believes in the theme of “balance”.
He would have represented his alma mater in table tennis and cricket tournaments, and gave firm support in an inter-school Jeopardy competition.
Among the others who were awarded are Sotana Singh, Rondrey Lewis, Dimetra Gordon, Siddiqah Nizamudeen, Havish Singh, Karsten Amsterdam, Nailah Morgan, Chris Hicks, Rihana Parker, Careem Garraway, Aaliyah Parris, Shequlla Franklin, Punraj Yogashur, Kyla Gordon, Tyrell Nedd, Kyle Wayne, Kimberly Norton, Keanna Russell, Ria Rampaul, Jadon Mahadeo, Mekhi Beckles and Keira Roberts.

The parents and legal guardians were also recipients of awards.
In her address to the awardees, Education Officer Vera Naughton recognised the tremendous support provided by parents and teachers to the awardees while highlighting the long history of the Guyana Public Service Union in providing support to its members and their dependents.
She noted that the support by the GPSU often goes unnoticed, nevertheless, she added, the Union will be steadfast in its recognition of members’ needs and their achievements, and that of their dependents.
The feature address was delivered by First Vice President of the Union, Dawn Gardener, who underscored that the parents of the top performer at NGSA are senior public servants, and that the Union was keen to approve all twenty-three applications received.
She commended the awardees for the exemplary level of discipline demonstrated during this unprecedented challenging time brought about by COVID-19, and the challenges faced by parents who are subjected to risky work environments and then have to go home to attend to their children.
