Grandfather dies in Essequibo Coast accident

…after visiting newborn grandchild

It was an exciting time for 55-year-old Briganands Rup, who had just visited his first grandchild for the first time.

However, tragedy struck when he was knocked down by a minibus along the Somerset and Berks Public Road, Essequibo Coast, Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam).
Rup, a carpenter of David James Access Road, was riding a motorcycle at the time of the incident, which occurred around 07:30h on Wednesday in the vicinity of the Somerset and Berks Nursery School.
Reports are that the man was just returning from the Suddie Hospital, where he visited his first grandchild for the first time – who was born Tuesday night.

Police said that the minibus BPP 2790 was proceeding east along the southern carriageway, when the driver of motorcycle CJ 3626, which was proceeding in the opposite direction, allegedly lost control and collided with the minibus.
Rup was taken to Charity Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival, Police said.
A breathalyser test was conducted on the minibus driver, a 55-year-old resident of Devonshire Castle, Essequibo Coast, and no trace of alcohol was found.
He is in custody assisting with this investigation.
