Scores of residents, including contractors, parents and trench cleaners, on Friday hosted a picketing exercise shortly after President David Granger landed at the Kayman Sankar Airstrip at Hampton Court, Essequibo Coast.
Visiting Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam) for the opening of a business expo at the Anna Regina Community Centre ground, the President was greeted by
protesters standing in front of the airstrip demanding his attention.
Headed by Member of Parliament Cornel Damon, the picketing exercise saw disgruntled persons expressing concerns about the state of the economy, the removal of water and electricity subsidies, the removal of the students’ cash grant, and the lack of assistance to the rice industry, among other issues.
Some of their placards read: “Granger APNU/AFC incompetent economy SHRINK”, “Restore Pensioners yearly Subsidies for GWI and GPL”, and “Restore school children’s $10,000 Grant”.
Damon said the protest was organised at a time when the region’s economy has slowed and many vendors are complaining of the economy being sluggish. He explained that parents are complaining on a daily basis about the increase in expenses in all sectors, including education. The protest was nevertheless peaceful, and lasted for an hour.
