All roads will lead to the Silver City Hard-Court Tarmac in Linden tonight, where the second group night commences in the Guinness ‘Greatest of the Streets’ football Championships.
Rescheduled because of torrential rainfall on May 1st, the event remains a highly anticipated affair. The playing area was made unplayable by the rainfall, and the decision to switch the matches to another date was driven by the coordinators and sponsors’ concern for the safety of the players.
According to the tournament coordinators in a release, “The Wednesday match-day [May 1st], which was rescheduled due to torrential rain, will now be staged on Sunday at the same venue [Mackenzie Tarmac]. It was a disappointment that no matches were able to be hosted, but you can’t control the weather. We have to be cognisant of the players’ safety, which is paramount in the tournament. The fixtures remain the same, so the teams are expected to arrive at the venue to compete.”
The release further said, “We expect another thrilling night of action, which is expected to captivate the fans who are expected to descend on the venue in droves.”
At 19:30hrs, Wisroc will oppose Presidential, and Barsenal will engage High Rollers at 20:00hrs while Coomacka will battle Quiet Storm from 20:30hrs.
The fourth match will pit defending champions Silver Bullets against Retrieve Unknowns from 21:00hrs, while Amelia’s Ward Russians oppose Haynes Hitters at 21:30hrs, and Swag Entertainment take aim at Dave & Celina’s All-Stars from 22:00hrs.
The tournament is initially being contested in a round-robin format featuring four groups of four teams. Upon conclusion of the group stage, the top two finishers will advance to the knockout round.
‘Group A’ comprises Assassa Ballers, Amazings, NK Ballers and Capital Storm; with ‘Group B’ featuring Amelia’s Ward Russians, Quiet Storm, ‘Coomacka B’ and Haynes Hitters.
