With the 17th Annual Diamond Mineral Water 55-mile Road Race signaling the closing of the season, Alanzo Greaves closed off his remarkable comeback by winning in an emphatic fashion on Sunday morning.
The conditions were perfect for what turned out to be one of the more exciting races in the history of the event with six of the top riders taking an early jump, breaking away from the pack within the vicinity of Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara, when the race rode off from Ocean View, Liliendaal heading east to Mahaicony and back for the finish.
Greaves stopped the clock in a time of two hours, 55 minutes and 51 seconds (2:55:51) to much joy of the amused audience present under the morning sun. Once again it was Greaves being closely followed by Team Cocos’ champion boy, Hamza Eastman, who closed off a very successful season and Jamal John (Team Cocos). Speaking with Guyana Times Sport, a delighted Greaves said “this win was the sweet to a bitter year”, having returned from a one year ban to come back and cap the year off with two wins is nothing short of spectacular.
The Linden Bauxite Flyers pair of Shaquel Agard, who won this year’s National Three-Stage and the penultimate race of the season, Team Alanis’ circuit race on Saturday, rode in to finish Fourth place and Silvio Inniss copped fifth.
Team Gillette Evolution’s junior rider, Christopher Cornelius took 6th position overall, as well as being 1st in the juniors division followed by Jornell Yearwood (Linden Bauxite Flyers) and Deeraj Garbarran (Team Alanis) in second and third respectively.
In the mountain bike class, Ozia McAully defeated second placed Micheal Holder and Shane Bourne in third position.
Top ranked Veteran, Team Cocos’ Junior Niles, took the top position in his category as he was trailed by Flying Stars’ Ian Jackson (2nd) and Carlton Wheelers’ Jaikarran Sukhai (3rd). Monty Paris won the Over-65 category.
