Green, Williams cop ‘luck of the draw’ doubles

The duo of Guyanese Sherwin Green and Trinidadian Richard Williams won ‘the luck of the draw’ doubles when the Malta Supreme Darts Tournament got underway Friday evening at the Millennium Manor Hotel on Hadfield Street, Georgetown.

In second place was the pair of top local player Sudesh Fitzgerald and twin-island republic’s Jacqueline Cook, while A Balchand and A Lacthman came third.

The participants had paid a fee of US$15 to enter each category, and ‘the luck of the draw’ winners took home 50% of the pool, second placed winners received 25%, while the other 25% was shared between the third and fourth place winners.

Today, the final day, action gets underway from 13:00 hrs, and both male and female singles and doubles will be played. In the individual categories US$100 will go to the players with the most 100 points, highest check out, shortest games, and most 180 points.

The Male and Female Singles games are the major attraction, with reigning Caribbean Singles champion Sudesh Fitzgerald being Guyana’s top ranked player. Luis Ramirez-Merlano, who teamed up with Fitzgerald to win the Caribbean Doubles title last year in Barbados, will also be in action.

Other players who are expected to defend home turf in the Male division are Lalchand Rambharose, Anil Lachhman, Sherwin Greene, Anthony Bissoondyal and Bholanauth Ramdyal; while, on the distaff side, Guyana will be represented by Rosetta Hiralall, Shondell Hyles, Hemwantie Amyan, Victorine Chandro and Melissa Smartt, among others.

Meanwhile, at the launching on Friday evening, Director of Sport Christopher Jones congratulated the Guyana Darts Association (GDA) for hosting the tournament, which has seen a 15-member squad from Trinidad and Tobago participating.

Jones also told the gathering that they can look forward to the support of the commission in hosting the tournament next year.
