Greenwood impressed with talent in Courts Pee-Wee football
The Courts Pee-wee championships which is organised by Petra Organisation is in its 5th year and opens the floodgates for talented under-11 players to showcase their potential.
It is this reason, newly installed Technical Director of the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Ian Greenwood says that he is impressed at the level of the talent at the ongoing Courts Pee-wee Schools Football Champions and says the focus is on development
“In terms of the ability of players, there is lots of individual skill we will see but going forward we will look to deal with how teams are set up but as of now, we are relying a lot on individual skill, so work needs to be done with coaches and players to create a better structure,” Greenwood explained.
He added, “Lots of raw talent that we look to develop over the next five or six years and hopefully some day they end of being in the Golden Jaguars.”
Though the technical director is pleased with the current structure of the tournament, he is of the contention that an expansion as it regards the length of the tournament will auger well for all involved.
The Englishman who is also an UEFA-Qualified Professional Football coach says that the long term goal is to have nationwide youth leagues and improved the level of coaching in Guyana.
“In terms of youth tournaments the ultimate plan is to have national youth leagues to have players play football play all year around since the long term goal at the end of my contact is to have a youth league at all the appropriate ages both in school and at club level,” the technical director explained.
The championships which saw 24 primary schools battling for supremacy will conclude this Sunday at the Banks DIH Thirst Park Ground where defending Champions St. Angela’s Primary will clash with neighbours St. Agnes Primary in what is expected to be riveting encounter from 15:00h.
