Growing food industry requires strengthening staff understanding, capacity – Health Minister

World Food Safety Day

Despite the many challenges from dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic, the strengthening of staff understanding and capacity has been a necessity in dealing with the growing food industry. This is according to Health Minister, Dr Frank Anthony in his World Food Safety Day message on Monday.
This year, World Food Safety Day, which is celebrated on June 7 each year, was celebrated under the theme “Safe food for now and tomorrow”.
Dr Anthony also said that in addition, field operatives are now more equipped in dealing with the increased demands, adding that while the pandemic is not over, the public and all workers within this health sector are urged to get their vaccines and wear protective equipment where applicable. “The MOH will continue to support the Veterinary Public Health Unit’s effort in ensuring that all products for local consumption and export are wholesome for human consumption,” Dr Anthony said.
The aim of World Food Safety Day is to draw attention and encourage action to prevent, detect and manage foodborne risks, which in the long run contributes to food security, human health, economic prosperity, agriculture, market access, tourism and sustainable development.
With multiple public health departments, the Health Minister said that the Ministry serves to ensure that every person has access to safe and nutritious food, which is important for sustaining life and promoting good health.
He added that the VPHU is tasked with promoting human health by taking the necessary steps to minimise the risks and spread of diseases between man and animal and animal food products.
Over the years, the VPHU, he noted, has maintained a risk management system used to check compliance with various processes and facilities via local and international food safety standards and practices.
