…thankful that fans and players followed COVID protocols

The fifth edition of the Prime Minister’s T20 Cup softball cricket competition ended last Sunday with a bang. The three final matches that produced the grand final each had all the fireworks expected, prompting President of the GSCL Inc, Ian John, to express gratitude to all the sponsors for their continued support during the COVID-19 pandemic.
John also showered praise on the fans and the players for being disciplined in maintaining all COVID-19 stipulated guidelines.
In an interview with this publication, John said, “The tournament was well targeted on the week it was played, as we were blessed with wonderful sunshine. As we looked at this week, and even the week before the tournament, we saw a lot of rain, so we have to give thanks to The Almighty for giving us good weather. To the sponsors, it is overwhelming to know that sponsors can come out in these tough times to still support cricket, or to support sports in general.
“The media has played its part, and it is because of the media that we were able to have sponsorship in such magnitude.”
John further noted that he is grateful to the fans who came out in support, as the tournament was held at Providence instead of Everest, where it was played on previous occasions. He relayed that in terms of the 2022 edition, he is hoping that COVID “goes its way”, as this would allow teams from Canada to participate. COVID, he said, was the main reason why no Canadian team played in this edition.
“Teams could not come from Canada because of the late approval to run this tournament. They could not also come because of the high air fares meted out to them. This thwarted the respective teams in Canada from travelling at that time. The teams are eager to come; as long as we get the clearance early, they will come in 2022,” John posited.
“We would like to thank the players and fans for the discipline that was shown by them to observe the COVID-19 guidelines that were stipulated in order for the tournament to be a success,” John said in closing his remarks.
This tournament was sponsored by Banks DIH, Regal Stationery and Computer Centre, Elegance Jewellery and Pawn Shop, It’s our Life ARD Youtuber, Crown Mining, Dinar Trading, Dyna’s Embroidery, Mohamed’s Enterprise, Permaul’s Trading, Rajiv Gandhi University, P and P Insurance, Star Party Rentals, Trophy Stall, Lucky Star Boutique, Price Chopper Store, and Associate Packers.
