GTA/THAG recommit to supporting tourism development

The Guyana Tourism Authority (GTA) and the Tourism and Hospitality Association of Guyana (THAG) signed a Memorandum of Understating (MoU) to assist in the promotion of sustainable tourism development by fostering professionalism throughout the industry, while collaborating with relevant Government institutions and networking with other related local, regional and international agencies.
The objective of this memorandum is to enhance cooperation and collaboration between the Association and the GTA.
The parties agreed to continue supporting tourism development at all levels and also to engage in the preparation of strategies and action plans for the development of sustainable tourism while undertaking a thorough analysis of the tourism value chain in all regions. This is to identify how the local economy can gain maximum advantage from tourism and to design and implement measures to strengthen local empowerment and engagement in the sector, including access to training.
According to the tourism bodies, the areas of cooperation will include cross marketing and information sharing, marketing, database development, fund development, capacity building and training and product and cluster development.
The MoU was signed at the launching of the 8th annual Guyana Restaurant Week 2018 earlier this week at OMG Restaurant, Sheriff Street, Georgetown.
GTA’s Director Brian Mullis in his brief remarks told media representatives on Thursday last that even though the two organisations have been partnering with each other, it was never “formal”.
Meanwhile, the tourism bodies also shared that they will also be launching “Resort Week”, where locals and foreigners will get a chance to experience Guyana’s resorts at an affordable price.
Even though the event is still in its planning stage, both THAG and GTA promise to launch the initiative before the festive season.
This initiative will be one of several that the bodies will be launching together following their formal partnership.
