For the 14th time since 2000, GTT will sponsor The Guyana Hockey Board’s National Indoor Championships billed for October 31 to November 5 at the National Gymnasium, Mandela Avenue.
The tournament began back in 2000 but was unfortunately disrupted in 2002 and 2011 but in 2016 the stage is set for the crowing of champions in three categories. Only the men will compete in division one while both men and women’s teams will be in action at the second level.
In the top male category, Pepsi Hikers who enter the competition as defending champions will be looking to add to their extensive run as champions with the likes of seasoned campaigners, Captain Robert France and Devin Munroe.
However, Hikers will not find it easy to win as they would have defeated Bounty GCC in the finals of the Lucozade Indoor Festival earlier this year, Bounty will surely be looking to even the score. Bounty also has records to validate their worth, having earned seven trophies to date and with the talents of Kevin Spencer and Orlando Semple, this year much is expected of the team.
Also in the spot light is Old Fort, who would have won three times and will be looking to Jason De Santos and Aderemi Simon as the men in form.
The Pizza Hut ladies enter as strong favourites this year boasting and will be aiming to extend their impressive seven-year winning streak to eight. With the skills of Sonia Jardine and Kerensa Fernandes, the ladies can be a handful to deal with.
On the other hand, Hikers ladies will be led by recent Lucozade MVP, Marisha Fernandes and fellow national player, Maria Munroe alongside the exciting young talent of Nicole Eastman in support.
