Joined by personalities of the pageantry and sports worlds, the attendees were given a taste of what is to come for the month-long happenings. Miss World Guyana 2018 Ambika Ramraj stood as one of the coordinating members alongside the former Miss World Vena Mookram.
GTT Managing Director Davie Sukhdeo explained that “Pinktober” was coined because October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and pink is the colour associated with breast cancer awareness. “It only made sense that we did a Pinktober to raise breast cancer awareness in the month of October,” she stated.
Partnering with private and public organisations, the Guyana Cancer Foundation has been one of the key entities to deliver services and assistance to cancer patients or those who may require a medical examination.
Bibi Hassan from the Foundation related, “At the Guyana Cancer Foundation, we have touched the lives of over 3000 people since we got the funds from GTT almost a year ago. We did that through outreach with funds raised by going into different communities around our country with medical outreach programmes.”
Ambassador for the company and former Miss World Guyana, Poonam Singh was one of the spokespersons throughout the programme as she called for cancer victims and survivors to be supported at all times and not only in October.
“To the healing survivors, you are a walking example of hope and you show us that with hope, the odds don’t matter. To the beautiful souls who are victims of cancer, you are blessed,” said Singh.
In initiatives to further extend the programmes, activities were introduced to areas such as Linden and Lethem to bridge the gap between all breast cancer victims and survivors and more importantly, to educate the public on the issue.
Presently, over $4 million has been collected and that amount is expected to grow as the activities commence.
